oooh yeah
it’s done :V
It just causes more problems and it’s such a grey area.
Yeah, fan-products in general are a grey area. Most of the time, artists live in this bubble where if you do great work it’s only more advertising for whatever you were inspired by, but if you sell that work then shark lawyers may strike on you out of nowhere.
Then it really is story of whether it’s worth it for them to pursue you (it’s easy to take a look at conventions and realize that usualy, no).
But fanfics are different because we can speak of a crack drabble as well as a whole verse being done — in the end it’ll depend of the editors’ mood or the authors’ feelings toward the matter :/
My biggest problem with fanfiction being paid is that it’s basically a ground for authors to hate people writing fics.
I mean, a fair share of authors are either mild or disagree with the idea of writing fanfictions of their works, but most of them never act on it because it is free and made solely for the enjoyment of their own fans.
But yeah, involve money and we’ll put ourselves in ugly, ugly things. I seriously don’t care about fanfics authors getting money (I’d seriously pay for some authors because yeah I love them and their works dearly), fanartists get paid by selling prints and buttons and all that yadda.
But I think authors are more scared of fictions because it feels more to them like people “”stealing”” their ideas? Like what if its a multi-book story and someone write a fanfic that actually went with an idea that the author had. What if that somebody get paid for it?
So yeah, that’s my only worry about it.
THIS IS WHAT I WAS DISCUSSING WITH A PAIR OF 12-YEAR-OLD KIDS. I am not willing to buy EVERY fucking game again and I don’t have a Netflix account.
I read that apparently, the xbox market is more important than ever in the US (they lost a lot on the Asia side, and they’re not the best in europe), so it would explain why it sounds so US-focused.
To be fair though, apparently PS4 too won’t do backward compatibility.
I was never huge on consoles (my father is way, waaaay more a PC gamer) but it sounds really sad that Sony nor Microsoft are kind of leading themselves to their own downfall.
(ok their bad market move + the fact that phone game is booming at the moment)
And generally, the fact that XBOX one is voice activated creep the fuck out of me, it means that it’s basically ALWAYS listening to what you’re saying??????
(abstergooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo /rolls away)
So, Amazon wants to get its greedy little fingers in the fanfic business, eh?
I have a lot of thoughts on this. Angry thoughts, to be completely honest. I’ll try to limit my use of capslock, but no promises.
I love the lack of capitalism in the creation of fanworks. It’s extremely important to me. We do it for ourselves, for each other. It is a free exchange of ideas and talents, done out of pure love and desire to create. FUCK YOU for trying to take that away from us.
I get it! Corporations just HATE that this huge, popular thing exists and they can’t figure out how to make money off it. So publishing companies scour archives for the next 50 Shades of Grey, trying to find anything that can have the ‘serial numbers’ filed off enough so that it can be resold as an original work.
They want to take something freely available, deny public access to it, then make people pay for the privilege of reading it. Isn’t capitalism beautiful?
I’m not saying that writers wanting to be paid for their work is inherently bad. Of course not! I have bookshelves full of books I paid money for. But people offering up their talents without requiring an exchange of goods in return is something I find truly beautiful. It goes against the grain of society, which teaches us ‘nothing’s ever free.’
Fandom is a small village, sitting around a campfire telling stories to each other. Anyone can sit and listen, anyone can contribute. You don’t need to pay to sit and listen – what a horrible shame it would be if someone built a fence, controlled the gate, held out their hand and denied you entry to the campfire if you didn’t have the cash in your pocket.
That is not what fanfic is about. It’s beautiful as is. Let’s not ever forget that.
AMEN TO THAT.
I also just realized that basically any game purchase through xbla won’t be put in xbox one because no backward compatibility
it’s as if you’re saying “sorry steam cant install these game on your new shiny computer because we don’t want to” ergo, bs.
I understand that there may be incompatibility between the new xbox components and the xbox 360, but it’s a really huge miscalculation to not have thought of that beforehand or to have ditched that option.
edit: also I love how they sold it with like “you’ll have tv channels! netflix! products!!!”
except netflix isn’t a thing in 3/4 of the world, so what does that left to europe users.
